Swarovski Crystal

Swarovski was established in the Austrian Tyrol in 1895 by Daniel Swarovski I. Mr Swarovski's goal was to set up a factory to the industrial production of cut crystal jewelry stones. He could hardly have foreseen that he was laying the foundation of a corporation which produces 20 billion stones annually, plus objects and ornaments in full cut crystal, chandelier parts, grinding and abrasive tools, optical instruments, and glass reflecting elements for road and rail safety. Production of crystal for one day is 24 tons of crystal! Swarovski was established as a family business, and today remains a family owned business, thus, alas, we cannot purchase shares on the stock market.

To our knowledge Swarovski is the only collectible producing company that was not formed with a sole purpose of producing figurines. What the company has learned from collectors was a whole new view of the marketplace. You can imagine a company used to producing chandelier parts, binoculars and grinding wheels to making and assembling the delicate crystal figurines.

In 1993 Swarovski created the first Crystal Memories figurines. I was not until 1995 that the swan mark was added to the pieces.

In 1979 Swarovski established a branch in the United States. This branch is now named Swarovski Consumer Goods of North America and serves collectors and retailers in North America.

The "Angel Ornament" in 1996, was the first Limited Edition from Crystal Memories. In 1997, a second Limited Edition Angel was made.

The actual number of pieces in a personal collection does not seem to affect the passion collectors have for their beautiful Crystal Memories pieces. When collectors gather you can always listen to stories of how the collection started, what the first piece was, and just about predict how they will end. After just the first piece, they just were bitten by the "Crystal Bug", as we have named it, and never again can they go to the shopping mall or Swarovski retailer and stop in to see what is new, or check for a long-wanted retired piece!
